The Death of Martin Luther King Jr
On April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee . King was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, and was announced dead at 7:05 PM that evening. The assassin was a fugitive from the Missouri State Penitentiary and was arrested in London at Healthrow Airport, he was then extradited to the United States, and was charged for the death of Martin Luther King Jr. He was sentenced for 99 years in Tennessee state penitentiary and died there on April the 23rd at the age of 70.
Prior to King Jrs death, he received consistent threats in relation to his work with the civil rights movement. Due to receiving these threats he decided to confront them and make them apart of his philosophy. He believed and educated that murder could never unstop the battle for equality within our society. After 1963 JFK assassination he told his wife: "This is what is going to happen to me also. I keep telling you, this is a sick society.President Lyndon B. Johnson declared April 7 a national day of mourning for the lost civil rights leader. A crowd of 300,000 attended his funeral two days later, on April 9
